You have probably heard about the many benefits of exercise. It keeps you fit, keeps the extra weight off, makes your skin look younger, helps you sleep better etc. While many fitness gurus will insist on the importance of exercise, few will show you how to exercise the right way. Taking these simple but effective steps will demonstrate how to exercise correctly.

Visit your Doctor First

Before rushing into a fitness or exercise program, the first thing you need to do is to go for a full checkup. Of course, if you are in your 40’s, you will not join the same fitness program as a 20 year old. Your doctor should be able to tell you how much your body can handle considering the results of the physical exam. It is also a good idea to get a second opinion on. Just make sure you know where you stand physically before rushing into any program.

Always Warm Up

Injuries will happen if you jump into exercising before warming up your muscles. Get your muscles warmed up for about 20 to 30 minutes. Incorporate some stretching in the warm up session. You can choose to warm up in the gym or you can do so on a track before working out at the gym. To warm up, skip rope, run, do some aerobics, or lift some light weights. Warming up prepares your body for the actual workout. Start slowly and increase the intensity of your routine as you are about to finish the warm up.

Do Not Exercise alone

Exercising alone makes it harder for you to enjoy the workout. Moreover, if you are training for a sport, exercising alone limits the extent you can try to push your strength limits. Having a workout partner or trainer also keeps you dedicated to your program. You can choose to workout with your friend or choose one of the dedicated regulars at the gym as your workout partner. Hiring a personal trainer or using your gym trainers is also a great option. When trying to lift heavy weights, always ask your training partner to spot you to avoid injuries.

Nutrition is Everything

If you want your program to work, you will have to feed your body with the right fuel. You cannot lose weight when you are eating junk. If you want to gain weight, you will have to eat enough calories to help you go up your weight class. Avoid crash diets as you will not only end up injuring yourself at the gym, but you will damage your health in the process. Speak to a nutritionist to give you the best diet advice depending on your nutritional needs. Keep educating yourself on what foods work best for your body.

After visiting your doctor, the next best thing you can do is get a training partner for your next workout. Schedule rest days in your workout program to give your body an opportunity to recover from all the hard work in the gym. Stay motivated and focus on achieving your fitness goal.
